The Role

We are hiring an SEO & GEO Director to own strategy, client outcomes, and team leadership across our full SEO book of business. This is not a delivery role - this is the person who sets the direction, holds the team accountable, and owns the results.

You will report directly to the company's Executive Team and will be expected to operate as the senior strategic voice in the room on all SEO engagements. The goal is for you to run the entire SEO function day-to-day so that leadership can focus on growth, sales, and company-level strategy.

What You Will Own

  • Multi-Client SEO Strategy: Set and maintain the SEO roadmap for a portfolio of home services clients. Prioritize work across on-page, off-page, technical, and local SEO based on each client's competitive position and goals.
  • Team Leadership: Lead multiple functional team members across content, technical SEO, and development. You are the one assigning work, reviewing output, and coaching the team up.
  • AI and Search Innovation: Stay ahead of how AI is reshaping search - from SGE/AI Overviews to LLM-driven answer engines. Integrate AI tools and thinking into the team's daily workflow. Own the agency's point of view on AI visibility and help clients understand what is changing.
  • Client Communication: Be the strategic point of contact for clients on SEO matters. Present QBRs, explain performance, and recommend course corrections. You do not need to be the account manager - but you own the SEO narrative.
  • Performance Accountability: Own organic traffic, rankings, local pack visibility, lead generation, and increasingly AI citation performance across your client portfolio. If results are off-track, you are the one diagnosing and fixing the approach.
  • Web Property Oversight: Ensure the technical health, content quality, and strategic alignment of client websites and web properties. Coordinate with developers on migrations, speed, schema, and site architecture.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of hands-on SEO experience with a demonstrated progression into leadership and strategy
  • Proven experience leading or managing a team - assigning work, reviewing deliverables, developing people
  • Strong command of all four SEO arenas: on-page, off-page, technical, and local
  • Comfortable setting strategy for multiple clients simultaneously and context-switching across accounts
  • Deep understanding of Google Business Profile optimization, local search, and multi-location strategy
  • Working knowledge of AI-driven search (SGE, AI Overviews, ChatGPT/Gemini/Claude answer surfaces) and a clear point of view on where it is headed
  • Experience with GA4, Google Search Console, SEMrush or Ahrefs, and Looker Studio or equivalent reporting tools
  • Ability to read and interpret data, identify trends, and translate findings into clear strategic recommendations
  • Excellent written and verbal communication - you will present to clients and write strategy documents regularly
  • *Must be US-based

Nice to Have

  • Agency experience managing a portfolio of clients (vs. a single in-house brand)
  • Home services, local services, or franchise vertical experience
  • Familiarity with PPC and how paid and organic work together
  • Experience with site migrations, domain changes, or large-scale technical SEO projects
  • Hands-on comfort with AI tools for content workflows, data analysis, and automation

Position Details

  • Location: Remote
  • Type: Full-time
  • Salary: $120,000+ per year
  • Reports To: CEO
  • Must be US-based

Cresset · Chicago, IL

Our Take:An unusual sector for this niche: Cresset is a multi-family office and private investment firm building out organic and AEO/GEO capability, worth a look if you want financial services exposure. Associate Director level, listed comp band looked malformed in the scrape so we've left salary blank rather than show a wrong number.

Our Take:HawkSEM is a digital marketing agency (Google, Meta, and Microsoft Ads partner), so this is agency-side work across client accounts. $80K-$90K listed, explicit framing around adapting strategy for Google AI Overviews and ChatGPT.

AI Replacement Risk, explained

We rate every role on how much of the day-to-day work could plausibly be done by current AI tools within the next year or two. It's a judgment call, not a hard science, based on three questions:

Task repeatability — is the work mostly repeatable execution (drafting, formatting, routine audits), or judgment-heavy (strategy, negotiation, prioritization)?
Precedent — are AI tools already doing a meaningful chunk of this work well today, in production, somewhere?
Accountability — does the role carry a decision or relationship someone has to own, not just an output that has to exist?

LOW

Mostly judgment, negotiation, or ownership work. AI assists, it doesn't replace.

MED

A real mix of judgment and repeatable execution. Expect the repeatable half to keep shrinking.

HIGH

Mostly production or output work, with real AI precedent already in the wild.

This is our own read, not a scientific index. Treat it as a conversation starter before you apply, not a scorecard.
